The Foxtrot will give you a good base which you will be useful in learning all dances. It is often called the "Dance of the first impression."
History:
Harry Fox, a Vaudeville comedian, introduced a new step with the song "Ragtime" in the 1913 edition of the Ziegfield Follies. This new way of dancing was going to put all the other steps (rancart). It quickly became the most popular dance in America and is today the standard for all social dances.
Music:
The music which accompanies the Foxtrot is written in 2/2 and 4/4. The first and third tempos are accented in the timing 4/4. The pallet of the tempos in the Foxtrot, create 3 dances:
Fox Trot slow, medium, and fast, also called the social tempo.
Characteristics:
The base composition of the Foxtrot includes the walking steps and the side steps. The dance halls and night clubs required the knowledge of three types of tempos with small steps. In the larger dance halls, it is possible to use longer steps requiring great control of movements, those that give this dance, an appearance of ease.
